In the traditional coffee supply chain, there is grave inequity for farmers and their communities within the coffee industry. At Unleashed Coffee, we do things differently. We believe in fairness in farming so we buy our beans directly from the farmers. By doing so, we can support improving the lives of the folks in the coffee farming communities.
Unleashed Coffee is excited to introduce our newest farming partner, Finca Santa Marta in the Guatemala highlands of Mataquescuintla.
The Rodriguez family of Finca Santa Marta cultivate coffee in a traditional, natural, and sustainable way. The coffees are grown with care and sun dried on patios. They have established a coffee producing business founded in integrity and sustainable craftsmanship. Together with his wife, Doña Lily, David Rodriguez, Sr. has put a lifetime of dedication and hard work into the family’s farm. Due to the high altitude of Finca Santa Marta (1800-2200 meters) many people believed it would be almost impossible for them to succeed at farming coffee on their land. But by making use of the natural spring water and loamy clay soil, these resilient farmers have been able to produce excellent quality coffees and have increased the volume of total production to meet demand. What started as a 7 hectares farm slowly grew to the 60 hectares it is today.
So what do these farmers have to do with children’s dental health?
When it comes to improving a community’s quality of life, the Rodriguez family knows how important children’s dental health is. They host an annual dental day which provides 100 children with dental cleaning, free of charge. Each year, their whole team makes the three-hour trek to move dental equipment from the city up to their village on the mountain so the children can get the care they need.
